Computer Maintenance and Repair Tools

XCLEANER  is a DAY SAVER!!! you must install the activex when you get the prompt. This is a gem for getting rid of spyware other programs don't detect! Charter customers see below

AVG ANTIVIRUS by Grisoft has a free version. Also on the same page as the free version is ewido anti-spyware. Ewido is a great anti spyware tool and I recommend it highly. If you like AVG  and Ewido you may prefer to upgrade to the full version. This is really a five star product.

Cloudmark Spam blocking free trial that works very well

Logmein  This is a great utility for remote desktop. In other words, if you are away from your computer and need to retrieve information or work on projects remotely you can set up an account, install the software, and you are only a click away from viewing your computer from anywhere. The full version has really nice options.

Superantispyware Try their free download, it is effective for Betrayware,

Counterspy This is a great program you have to buy, but it does more than scan for spyware. There is a trial software and the price is very reasonable Check warnings if you are using Citrix or similar product

Panda Online Virus Scan  Best to run every now and then even if you have virus scanning software on your computer, they have a newer version that scans for spyware too. This has been around for awhile and they just keep getting better Some of the things it detects are just cookies so don't get too alarmed when you see those. If you clean out your history file, cookie file, and delete the temporary internet files before you run it you will get a more accurate test.

ATF-Cleaner is a nifty little cleaner for cookies and temporary internet files, etc

Spybot S&D  If you have Windows 98 or lower this is a good one

Adaware  A great Compliment to Spybot.

Webroot Software offers Spysweeper....I think they might still have a trial version

Microworlds MWAV is also very good

Merijn.Org has a lot of great downloads. If you use HiJack This be very careful you understand what you are removing. They also have Kazaabegone to get rid of kazaa problems

LSPfix gets rid of hijack and redirect problems...please read their instructions very carefully

Stinger is a quick virus checker. They update it all the time so if you download it remember it must be re-downloaded next time for the latest version

Belarc Advisor will give you a screenshot of all you need to know about your system. This is especially helpful when you want to do upgrades

Pest Patrol is another great product. It also can be purchased at the Dell website

Remember to disable System Restore if you are running XP until you have your system cleaned out, and don't forget to re-enable it after you have removed all viruses and spy ware. Also Create a new restore point just to be safe.

If you are getting hijacked (wrong web start page shows up) go to internet explorer, go to tools, go to internet options, go to programs, go to bottom of page and click on reset web settings, click ok, then go to general and in the address bar type in the start page you want (i.e. www.google.com,    www.cnn.com,etc) then click apply and ok. Then click the house icon and see if you can get back online

Outlook Express and Outlook Mail issues  Recently I have seen a lot of email  issues that are caused by too many saved emails. Try deleting some emails, don't forget the sent items and the deleted items. This is usually caused by maxing out your mail store folder. To avoid this in the future, create new mail folders for messages you want to save as the default folders have size limits.

Annoyances.org has some great forums and lots of helpful advice

CastleCops is another great place to get help

HOAXES We all receive those forwarded emails that have a trail of addresses. These addresses are easily harvested by Spammers, so think twice before exposing your family and friends email address. If the joke or message is that good, take the time to copy and paste it to a new email. Also a lot of HOAXES have been circulating lately, Don't be gullible, for all you know these could have been started by people just trying to get emails to spam. Learn about virus myths and hoaxes here or http://www.snopes.com/  or www.museumofhoaxes.com/

Be careful which anti spyware programs you install, some are actually spyware programs that can harm your system. For more information about what is real and what is not go to spyware warrior

*Charter customers who use their security suite, be aware that the security suite is a backweb program and most outside antivirus and anti spyware cleaners will view the security suite as spyware. and will disable it which in turn disables your internet connection. then you must call charter to re download the security suite. Also be aware that once a port is allowed for backweb activities you are all the more vulnerable to unwanted intrusion. This is a highly undesirable position to be in and I would think twice before allowing a layered service to be added by Charter or any other ISP. Backweb is just what it says, a web application that runs in the background usually without your being aware of it and I like to think of it as leaving the back door open.

Your Computer Helper does not send unsolicited emails, and any unsolicited email is Spam.
